iSkin Vibes Swirl Folio Review: A Nice Design But Lacks Some Protection

iSkin's Vibes Folio for iPad Mini

iSkin’s Vibes Folio for iPad Mini

The Vibes Swirl from iSkin is part of their extensive lineup of iOS cases. Earlier this year, iSkin entered the market for iPad Mini cases, and unveiled the Vibes Swirl along with the Solo FX and Aura models.

The Vibes Swirl is a folio case, meaning it folds like a book with front and back protection. It features a raised swirl pattern fabric finish, which actually looks pretty unique and sets it apart from other cases. It features 3 different viewing angles with the integrated stand, and has speaker, camera, and lighting cable cutouts. The case also has pockets to fit two credit cards, or business cards. The iPad Mini snaps into place with the integrated brackets on 4 sides, and they seem pretty secure so I wouldn’t worry about my iPad falling out.

Unfortunately to me, this case lacks the quality of a “wow factor” case. One of the biggest issues I have with this case is that it does not have a feature that holds the case down. While it does have magnets to activate the magnetic sleep on/off feature Apple has implemented, I’m surprised that iSkin did not bring their own magnetic lock as we saw in the Aura2 for the iPad 2nd/3rd/4th generation. As well, it is lacking protection-wise. Being a bit overprotective of my devices, I was really hoping for more protection features. Instead the top, bottom, and volume rockers are completely exposed, and not protected by the case. While this may not be a big issue for some, I would prefer more protection. Also, I found that the credit card holders as well as the stand brackets were a bit flimsy compared to the Aura2 folio for the iPad. Finally, this case isn’t exactly the thinest case on the market, and will add bulk to your iPad Mini.

The Vibes Swirl comes in three different colours: purple, black and beige. Personally, my favourites are the black and purple options. As usual, iSkin packs the case with an iSkin branded cleaning cloth along with a cleaning wipe. The price for this case is $49.99, and is a bit on the expensive side for a case.

Overall, this case is nice looking, but isn’t the greatest choice on the market today. However, it’s not the worst. If you need 360 degree protection, there are options out in the market for a lower price. I was surprised with this case, as I usually expect higher quality products from iSkin. While I do enjoy the unique design on this case, I feel as if though I’m compensating looks for overall quality. Just something to keep in mind if you decide to purchase this case.

You can purchase the product direct from the iSkin website.
