Mophie is a company known mostly for their battery cases for iPhone and other smartphones. After the success of their battery cases, they have recently entered the iPad case market. The Mophie Workbook is one of their installments, and is a unique case. We recently obtained a review sample from our friends at MobileFun, and will this case be worth your money?
The design of the Workbook is a “folio case”, which means it flips open for access to your screen like a book. I enjoy the simplistic design of the solid colour, which makes it feel clean. Mophie adds an elastic strap that holds the case when not in use. Something unique about this case is that the straps come in 4 different colours, and the different coloured straps depend on the colour case you buy. This certainly does add a customization feature, and is something unique. However, the straps are quite tight, and are hard to insert the 1st time using them.
Design-wise on the exterior, Mophie did provide protection around the iPad, allowing access to volume rockers, camera, speakers, headphone jack, 30-pin connector as well as the power button. However, it doesn’t give protect all of the sides, something I wish that more companies would do. The case is designed with faux leather, making it easy to clean, but is durable at the same time. On the interior, it has a soft “plush” material that won’t scratch your iPad.
Inserting your iPad is quite easy, as you just slide your iPad after detaching the Velcro tab. The iPad is secured, but make sure just to close the Velcro tab. We don’t want your iPad falling out of the case! So make sure to secure it! This case will fit the iPad 4th, 3rd and 2nd generation.
“INFINITE VIEWING ANGLES”:
“Infinite viewing angles” is the feature that differentiates this case from others on the market. Mophie describes the workbook as being adjustable and secure at any viewing angle for watching, typing or browsing.
To access the different viewing angles, simply detach the Velcro back tab. Then, bring the case forward and secure it down with the Velcro bottom. There are no specified tabs to place the viewing angles, so I really like how the Velcro allows you to choose your own angle.
With this folio-style case, I can totally see this being used as a keyboard case as well. If you buy a Bluetooth keyboard, it would be a nice addition when using this case. Added with the adjustable viewing angles, it would be similar to adjusting the screen to a laptop. This would be practical, and may even be great for students. As more and more students are starting to use tablets as laptop replacements, this case is a nice and cheaper alternative than buying a specific keyboard case from Zagg, Logitech and other competing companies.
Other features that this case includes are the interchangeable straps. Each case comes with 4 different coloured straps, and it depends on the coloured case you buy. The case also has the magnetic lock integration, which allows you to wake your iPad when it’s opened, and puts it to sleep when it’s closed. Also, if they sold more straps in different colours separately, it would add to the customization feature.
The biggest complaint I have is how difficult the installation of the strap was. At first, inserting the brackets the holders was frustrating. The holder for the bracket is quite small, so if it was a bit larger, installing it would be easier. So when you adjust the strap from open and close, you will find a bit of resistance. Also, the material on the interior of the case really is a magnet for dust and other particles.
The price for this case from MobileFun is only $44.99 USD/CAD and £34.95 in the UK. For this price, it’s worth it. It’s cheaper to buy it from MobileFun than from the official Mophie website, so it’s an even better deal! We have provided links below to purchase from MobileFun with the Canadian, American, and UK stores. They only sell the case in grey at the moment, but hopefully they will sell them in more than one colour.
Overall, this case is quite sophisticated, with a great simplistic design. The addition of the multiple straps allows it to fit the taste of the user. However, with a few small changes, such as fixing how the straps are inserted, this product could be even better. But overall, this case is definitely worth it for the price you pay.
