At today’s press event in California, Apple finally unveiled the much anticipated iPad Mini. This rumour has been going around for quite some time, and it finally came true today. The iPad Mini has a 7.9” screen, which is smaller compared to their 9.7” iPad. The size of the iPad Mini is just a tad bigger than the 7” Nexus Seven from Google, and the other 7 inch iPads.
The iPad Mini is 7.2mm thin, 23% thinner than the 4th generation iPad. According to Apple’s press event, it’s as thin as a pencil. It weighs an impressive 0.68 lbs, 53% lighter than the iPad, and as light as a pad of paper. The thinness is quite significant compared to other smaller tablet devices, and the device will come in white and black. It will come with iOS 6, and will feature Apple’s new lightning connector. As well, Apple has their Smart Covers being sold for the new iPad Mini.
The iPad Mini features the A5 processor, similar to the iPod touch 5th generation. It will have a 720p front-facing FaceTime camera, with a 5 megapixel back camera. It will support 4G LTE 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi at 5.2Ghz, and Bluetooth 4.0
However, what’s not significant about this new iPad Mini are the prices. The prices for the iPad Mini here in Canada start at $329 for 16GB, $429 for 32GB, and $529 for the 64GB. Compared to the Nexus 7 from Google, the 8GB Nexus 7 starts at $209, and the 16GB having a price tag of $259. If you need to save money, there is a significant price between the two devices. The iPad will also have the Cellular connection, but those start an extremely high price of $459 for the 16GB, $559 for the 32GB, and $659 for the 64GB. You can buy the cellular model from Telus, Rogers, and Bell in Canada. For the US, you can get cellular from AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.
Let’s face it, the iPad Mini will not be affordable for many consumers, especially to those who were hoping that this device would start at a decent price. However, this product will sell, but may see sales not as high as predicted. It will take away market share from the other 7” tablets, but that’s only because of Apple’s brand recognition. It will be interesting to see how this device sells, and time will tell if these are going to sell during the holiday season.
