[EXCLUSIVE] Did Apple Steal The Name “EarPods” From An Episode of a Frontline Documentary?

Lately, Apple has been under fire for patent lawsuits against the new clock app, stealing it from Swiss train company. There has been the negative response from the public and press to the disastrous new Apple Maps. But Jordan’s Tech Stop has learned that the name of Apple’s new earphones, “EarPods” may have been stolen from a Frontline documentary, an American documentary series on PBS.

This documentary from Frontline titled “The Persuaders” . This was filmed back November 9th 2004, and was a documentary based on advertising and marketing. But when they got to a segment on Apple advertising, I was interested. Remember those clever Apple commercials about the iPod featuring music? I sure do. But back in this documentary, Keith Reinhard, the Chariman of DDB Worldwide was commenting about Apple and music, and this is what he said:

The campaign for iPod is remarkable. When I see the poster as I’m passing by, when I go on the website and it comes to life, and I hear the music track going. And then when I put my little iPod, EarPods on, and I see the white chords against my black jacket, I’m in that poster, and the poster is me. And then the music, my music, comes over my iPod, and it’s a brand experience.

Keith Reinhard clearly said “EarPods” and it doesn’t seem like a coincidence to me that Apple would name their new product EarPods. This documentary is old also, so Apple may have thought that people forgot about this episode of Frontline. This follows all the lawsuits and the bad consumer reaction iOS 6 is facing now. We have reached out to Apple, and will update this post if we get a response.

To watch the video, visit the website here. Go to chapter two (if it starts at a different chapter), Emotional Branding, and the Apple segment starts around 6:05.

So what do you think about this? Coincidence, or another patent dispute? We don’t think it’s a coincidence, but we will see how Apple responds if we get a reply back.
