Many of us heard by now that Steve Jobs has resigned as the CEO of Apple Inc. He will now be replaced by the former COO Tim Cook. However, Steve will continue to serve as chairman of the board now. But now with Steve not in the top position, what will happen to Apple? Many question that, but we all know…this is the end of an era. Steve Jobs has shaped technology in his time. He shaped the PC era with the Macs, the music industry with the iPod and iTunes, the smartphone industry with the iPhone, and of course the tablet/post-pc industry with the iPad. Although there were already similar products out before, the magic of Steve was making the product sell. He is considered one of the greatest entrepreneurs. So let’s look back to what Steve has achieved through the years.
Let’s go back to the year of 1976. This was the year he co-founded Apple with Steve Wozniak. He met Wozniak in 1971, and they were friends. In 1978, they recruited Mike Scott to serve as the CEO as Apple. In 1983, he obtained John Sculley from Pepsi-Cola to serve as CEO. He said to him, “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?” Hmmmm….I’d know what I’d like to do! The year after, he launched Macintosh. This was a revolution, with
a graphically appealing interface, yet small in size. In 1985, Steve got fired from his own company. However, he said many years later that this could have been one of the best things that could have happened to him.
So after he got fired, he founded the NeXT Computer company. He created a workstation. It was here he began to experiment with technology such as the Mach kernel, the digital signal processor and the Ethernet port. In 1986, Steve bought The Graphics Group from Lucasfilm. This eventually turned into the well-known company Pixar. The company created blockbuster favourites such as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life and Finding Nemo.
In 1996, Apple bought NeXT, and Steve was back at Apple. This was when Apple was almost bankrupt. However, Steve and his magic brought Apple back to life. One of the
major products was the first iMac computer, introduced in 1998. Then in 2001, he changed the industry of music. He unveiled the iPod, the iPod classic to be precise. Then came iTunes, and the iTunes store. In 2003, he brought iTunes to Windows. I laughed when he said this was “the best Windows app ever written!” In 2007 came the iPhone, and the iPod touch. In 2010, he came out with the iPad. This was a revolutionary product, changing the way we could now do amazing tasks, all with this device. He was starting the post-pc era, because you could do email, social networking, video calls, and much more all on a thin device at a lower cost than a PC.
Now in 2011, he has resigned as CEO. So how will Tim Cook bring this company further?
Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as chairman of the board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration. -Tim Cook
In my opinion, Steve has done so much to the tech world. His products are innovative and legendary, and he always has this passion for the company and his products. I consider him one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the century. Thank you Steve to what you have done. Your products simply “just work.”
